Saunton Sands - 1984

Devonshire

We stayed at Acorns during our tour of The Westcountry in September.

The site is tucked away down some narrow lanes and we were pleased that we met no-one while towing our 23-foot caravan.  However, do not be put off by the narrow lanes, as there are many passing places.  The Acorns website gives clear instructions for finding the site.

Entrance at N50.9542° W3.6821°.

The site covers about thirteen acres of which about four are set up for caravans, with both grass and hard pitches.  Most pitches have their own electricty point and tap.

There is a heated swimming pool, a sauna and a hot tub and also a large social area divided into two rooms.  One contains some gym equipment, a pool table and a table tennis table, while the other has a pleasant lounge with a large library of books and board games.

We particularly liked the lights in the lounge, which used to be exactly what they look like!

From here we visited Knightshayes, a National Trust property just outside Tiverton.

Saunton Sands - 1984

We visited Saunton Sands while holidaying nearby with our children.  We had heard of a naturist beach in the area and asked at the Tourist Information Office in Braunton.  We were directed to the toll road where we paid the modest toll and then drove to the car park.  We then had a walk of about a mile and a quarter across the dunes to the southern end of the beach where we found a quiet spot - not difficult as there were very few people about - and settled down.

Our children enjoyed playing on the beach and in the dunes and we all enjoyed watching the land yachts racing up and down the beach.

Access to the toll road is at N51.0951° W4.1687°.

Crazy Well Pool is a pool on Dartmoor about a couple of miles south of Princetown. It is about a hundred yards by fifty yards, so is big enough for a good swim, and tradition says that it is bottomless. However modern investigations have shown that it is about sixteen feet deep.

There is a small parking area off the minor road at N50.5061° W4.0199°, from where the pool is a walk of just under a mile and a half. From the sharp bend near the parking area, take the track going eastwards along the side of the woods. Follow this track until seeing a path beside a stream bed to the left of the track. Follow the path uphill for a couple of hundred yards to the pool.

Unfortunately on the day we visited the weather wasn't conducive to nude bathing, but on a sunny day this would be an ideal spot to relax, if no one else is around.

About 180 yards east of the pool is Crazywell Cross, thought to be one of the marker crosses for the Monks' Path from Buckfast Abbey to Tavistock Abbey.
