We stayed two nights at the Maryland Health Society, or MaHeSo, in Maryland. We hired one of their static caravans and enjoyed their hospitality. While walking round the site we were amazed to see hummingbirds flying around. Later we chatted with one of the club members who showed us the hummingbird feeders outside his cabin. He told us that often there are as many as four or five feeding there. We later found out that they were ruby-throated hummingbirds and that they migrate north for the summer from the southern tip of Florida and Central America.

While staying at MaHeSo we spent a whole day travelling to and exploring Washington DC. We drove to the nearest station and caught a train in to the city. There we took a tour run by a company called DC Ducks which uses World War II DUKWs. We were shown several of the important buildings of Washington. Part of the tour was on the Potomac River. We also visited the National Cathedral and found the statue of Sir Winston Churchill outside the British Embassy. The statue has its right foot forward, standing in American territory, and its left foot back, standing within the Embassy boundary, on British territory, symbolising the fact that Sir Winston was half American and the links between the two countries.
